Modern instrumentation often requires the transport and switching of flowing gases or liquids to handle the analytical sample. The thorough evaluation that injection methods have received as a part of the overall development of instrumentation and columns has clearly indicated the superior results are obtainable with chromatographic injectors and valves. Extracolumn band-broadening characteristics are comparable or superior to that of syringe injection, and valves are easier too install and operate and less expensive than a switching system in which flow is directed by manipulating pressures at carrier gas junctions . .
Now used in many NASA projects .
