The Silcosteel Process . . . is a Restek patented method for deactivating stainless steel surfaces by . . .
high temperature / vacuum deposition of silica into the atomic lattice of steel and alloy surfaces
The original concept been improved and extended to Sulfinert treatment designed specifically for Gas sampling
and GC analysis of Sulfur Compounds ( air monitoring and Petroleum industry, HC fuel analysis .
Siltek is an improved Silcosteel deactivation ( and replaces Silcosteel for many Restek products particularly
for SilcoCans , glass GC Liners, Glass wool for pesticides )
Note : Under Restek new terminology Sulfinert and Siltek are the same

NEW Process

Silcosteel-CR Tubing and fittings for enhanced resistance to Inorganic Acids, salts
- approaching the inertness to that of Hastalloy C
Silcosteel-AC for anti-coking properties
Silcosteel-UHV - for High Vacuum applications - fast pump down and bake-out

The various treatments ( ? ) - use different silica film thickness ( 0.1 to 20um ) and deactivation methods

  • it consists of the vapor phase deposition of a micron-sized film of fused silica onto the surface
  • this layer is relatively flexible and robust and will withstand high temperatures ( >450C)
  • the fused silica layer passivates the metal surface against corrosion and has the ""chromatography inertness"
approaching that of fused silica glass.
For the ultimate in "GC chromatography use" the silica is further deactivated with proprietary high temperature silane deactivation

For chromatography applications . . .
Air Sampling / Monitoring Components

  • * it is far superior to glass-lined stainless steel ( GLT )
  • the ultimate inertness is achieved by specially treating the inside surface of capillary column
( and packed columns ) with a high temperature polymeric silane deactivation

Treatment is ideal for passivation / deactivation

  • for GC capillary columns ( Restek MXT ) and Silcosmooth packed GC columns
  • Sample transfer lines eg Purge and Trap; GC/Mass Spec
  • Treating any metal surface - GC injector / detector  components port; Valco Gas Sampling & Switching Valves; GC/MS parts; Silcocan air sampling canisters and cylinders; samples loops
  • -AC conveys anti-coking properties to stainless steel eg rocket motor nozzles -CR - for corrosion resistance
